the PATRIOT PHILOSOPHY The anti-British lobby has always caricatured patriots as ‘my country, right or wrong’ xenophobic bigots engaged in a mindless rearguard campaign against the inexorable advance of liberal enlightenment . On closer scrutiny, the core of this ‘enlightenment’ is seen to be multiracialism and the eventual abolition of nation states under a world government with an egalitarian philosophy. And of course those subscribing to this outlook present themselves as exclusive occupants of the ‘moral high ground’ in politics, education and socio-economic policy in general. Like their Marxist soul-mates, they dismiss all alternative viewpoints as merely ‘reactionary’; that is to say, as lacking any intrinsic moral or intellectual merit . But just to be on the safe side, these self-styled libertarians strenuously deny a platform to any patriotic movement . Much to their chagrin, however, a kindly Providence has given us the freedom of the Internet. So we must not fail this opportunity to expose the falsity and duplicity of so-called liberal enlightenment, and to put forward the altogether more robust and wholesome moral and intellectual philosophy of patriotism . Accordingly, the following notes are the contribution of a life-time British patriot : Get one thing straight from the start : there is actually no such thing as ‘Patriotism’, since the ‘ism’ suffix implies little more than an adopted belief like, for example, Methodism or Socialism . It is a matter of what you are, not what you choose to think . Below superficial posturing and bureaucratic definitions the genuine patriot is rooted in the sense of identity, of belonging within a racial and national community with a common ancestry, shared ethos, traditions and cultural heritage. This finds expression in our national festivals, traditional anthems and songs, literature, memorial ceremonies and many more communal activities ; all tending to strengthen the bonds of racial and national kinship and infuse the individual participants with a corresponding self-esteem and sense of security. None of which, let it be noted, poses any threat or insult to the people of different race and other countries. Now it is the experience of all serious researchers, and largely self-evident anyway, that most social pathology arises from a sense of rootlessness ; of lost direction, discredited authority, unworthy role-models and moral anarchy. Which accounts among other things for the high incidence of anti-social behaviour among immigrants ; their own roots being of course elsewhere. So it ought to be clear enough by now that allegedly ‘libertarian’ legislation over the last fifty-odd years has had a profoundly alienating effect on the native British people, diluting their identity via uncontrolled immigration and reducing them to little more than ciphers in bureaucratic schemes like the European Union and other social engineering projects . Not content with this, successive governments have also criminalised overt resistance to their sociopathic folly , thus further alienating the indigenous population from the ‘Establishment’ and its law and order agencies. This is a regime which reduces identity to possession of an official card and entry on a computerised register; as if becoming British was no different to joining a darts club or opening an account. And along with fatuous concessions to feminists, homosexuals and religious zealots, the Establishment has also sabotaged the two-parent family with all its inherent capacity to inculcate good behaviour and respect for moral authority and guidance. Parental authority and guidance is then further eroded by torrents of mindless, decadent and amoral propaganda issuing from the mass media and corrupting their childrens’ attitude to society and the world at large. (And then officialdom, aided by the media, has the chutzpah to blame the parents for their childrens’ delinquency !). It so happens that the most profound shift affecting social philosophy and psychoanalytic thought over the last hundred years or so has been due to existentialism . That subject is much too involved and cerebral to be dilated upon in this article; but its central thesis is that, for all the benefits of modern society, the individual nowadays seems to be losing his or her bearings and increasingly fearful of an apparently indifferent cosmos where death, suffering, chance, uncertainty, inequity and guilt are the only certaintiesof human experience. This alienation affects people regardless of their material comforts , consumer credit, social status and educational attainments. It is now an integral feature of the human condition, and has to be recognized as such in any political and social philosophy worth consideration.. But what we have at present is an Establishment hell-bent on dissolving what remains of any individual’s sense of any meaning and purpose in life beyond Hansard, the credit card and the welfare state . Meanwhile the Church has morphed into a citadel of superstitious sociology, and all manner of meretricious cults are cashing in on this spiritual despair. In such a milieu , what could be more absurdly anachronistic and incongruous than conspicuous Muslims pointing their assembled backsides to an English sky ? Most of us find little enough use for the Bible these days, so who needs a primitive arabic scripture except those with nothing else to fill their otherwise empty lives? Western man is now belatedly aware that there is no divine presence overseeing human destiny; no overriding meaning and purpose in life beyond what we as individuals choose to give it. We are thus condemned to be free; to choose, and accept the consequences with dignity and stoicism.. It is a fearful freedom for the ‘other-directed’ type of person; hence the so-called ‘angst’ of modern man; meaning a non-specific feeling of dread in a world drained of abiding principles, trustworthy guidance and secure foundations . All his frantic indulgences in consumption, sensuality and frivolous entertainments are overshadowed by his consciousness of death, suffering, inequity, guilt, conflict, risk, loneliness and uncertainty. The bumptious optimism and self-assurance of Western society in the 19th century has given way to an era of pervasive nihilism and spiritual bankruptcy; a world in which since anything goes, everything soon follows. The rising generation, feeling itself abandoned to this wilderness, expresses its despair in disruptive, rebellious and vandalising behaviour , inventing its own bizarre versions of identity as it goes along. Such desperation moves one more to pity than contempt. Meanwhile those who choose to accept their racial ancestry, cultural heritage, nationality and personal circumstances as given, and do their utmost to realise their potential for social harmony, justice, cultural enrichment and material security are succinctly defined as patriots. Such people never had an identity problem , and have invested all their lives in a nation state which experience over many centuries has proved more cohesive, successful and inspirational than any other on offer. They are sensibly resistant to arbitrary and reductionist ideologies which seek to come between man, nature and whatever gods may be. They believe only what they know from experience and simple observation of the real world around them. In short, the genuine patriot embodies everything necessary to achieve and maintain a worthwhile society. He or she will never understand why anybody -least of all our own politicians - could construe patriotic expressions as implying hostility towards the people of different ancestry and cultures. No sensible person hated Germans for being German ; only when they sought to invade and annexe our homeland and impose their own regime. Today's alien immigrants are economic opportunists; evolutionary hitchhikers and squatters whose presence in large numbers is incompatible with maintaining the identity, cohesion and cultural heritage of British society. They know very well they can never be regarded themselves as integral to Britishness, but remain content to be parasitical upon it for as long as it is foolish enough to allow it. And the fact that this generates increasing animosity regarding their unwanted intrusion into our national life is one they will just have to live with until their eventual repatriation. For if it is our patriotic duty to defend the British identity and homeland in time of war, that same duty is with us always. Now that a perfidious Establishment has abandoned its primary obligation , only the resolve of rank and file patriots can save this race and nation from the abattoirs of history . That indispensable sense of identity, responsibility and purpose is armour enough against the existential despair and rootlessness generated by self-serving careerists and political promiscuity. . A retired psychiatrist once confided to me that the best defence against mental diseases was creative activity ; for that lifted the individual out of morbid self-absorption and invested his life with real significance and authentic individuality. Similarly, the patriotic attitude invests the native Briton’s existence with more significance and value than anything else on offer . It will always have to contend with the machinations and rapacity of an envious world, but will respond with that same indomitable spirit which infused our most illustrious ancestors .
